Overwork. Burnout. Repeat.  Is this a cycle you are familiar with?

Running a business is hard work. You’ve got passion for what you do so you probably don’t see it that way.

Are you grabbing a sandwich while running in between meetings?

Or seeing a client in the evening instead of going to the gym?

Are you working all weekend to ‘catch up’ rather than spend time with friends?

As someone who values their work this all probably sounds reasonable and just what you have to do to succeed in your business.

BUT AT WHAT COST? 

If you aren’t taking care of yourself physically and emotionally you are going to end up burning out.

There is only so much go, go, go your body can take. Have you ever got a cold or flu on holiday? Do you know why? It’s because your body has finally got a chance to repair itself and get rid of all the crap in your lungs.

Thanks for the lecture. I know I should take care of myself but…

OK so you know that it would be great to spend more time on your health and relationships but whenever you try it just goes by the wayside.

WHY YOU ARE DRIVEN TO WORK HARD. 

Your unconscious mind controls the majority of your behaviour. It’s doing what it thinks you need in order to survive. You would think it would automatically move you towards the gym and a green smoothie then right? Wrong.

It’s been programmed by your perception of your childhood experiences. Not the experiences themselves, but your perception of them (the meaning you make about them).

For instance, I grew up in a family that worked hard, all the time. I learnt to work hard at school and that was seen as good. My parents were proud of my achievements. The perception that I took was I had to work hard in order to be a good person. Clearly that wasn’t the intention of my parents who loved me no matter what I did, but as I said, it’s the perception which is important.

I burnt out big time at 29. I was sick, stressed with chronic pain.  Having to take extended time off work was a huge wake up call to me. Up until then I had taken my health for granted. Even up until last year I was overworking to the point of exhaustion.

THEN I DID SOME DEEP WORK ON MY UNCONSCIOUS MIND WHICH CHANGED EVERYTHING. 

Using Matrix Reimprinting I uncovered unconscious limiting beliefs that were keeping me in overdrive. This one was the game-changer.

I BELIEVED IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO SAVE THE WORLD AND I HAD TO DO IT ALL BY MYSELF.

Wowzer, no wonder I was stressed! No wonder I never felt good enough! Think of the pressure I was under.  Now that I believe I’m only responsible for saving myself, life is SO much easier!

You might have a similar limiting belief, or something else like “I’m responsible for everyone’s happiness”, “I’m not worthy of love unless I work hard”, “I don’t deserve to relax”.

These beliefs are called limiting beliefs because they make your happiness conditional. They were created to help you survive, hence they are very powerful.

If you go up against these beliefs you will feel a negative emotion.

HAVE YOU EVER FELT GUILTY FOR TAKING TIME OFF?

This is your mind’s way of pulling you back into line with the belief that you should work hard. You act on your emotions so by feeling guilty for taking time off you are surely going to get your ass back in the office and work hard and hence survive.

Although these beliefs served you well in childhood, if they are not allowing you to thrive, perhaps it’s time to reprogram your mind!
