Everyone is talking about VISION! GOALS! PLANNING!
Let’s make 2018 the best year yet!
That’s all well and good you think. If it wasn’t for the nagging voice in your head shouting
“YOU CAN’T DO THAT!”
“YOU’LL NEVER MAKE IT SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT BOTHER”
“YOU AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH”
“WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?”
I’ll let you into a little secret.
The voice is wrong and you don’t have to listen to it.
WHY DO I HAVE THIS NEGATIVE VOICE IN MY HEAD?
Imagine you were a protective parent trying to stop your child getting lost in the woods. What’s a quick way to make sure your precious little baby doesn’t wander off?
YOU WOULD SCARE THEM! You would tell them the woods are dangerous. You would tell them they will get eaten by a bear!
Now you know that actually the woods are not inherently dangerous and the chance of being eaten by a bear in Surrey are close to zero. In reality they would probably wander off, get hungry and find their way home before sunset.
But you aren’t acting on statistics. You are acting on SURVIVAL. No matter how slim the chance of something bad happening to your child you will do everything in your power to protect them.
This is EXACTLY what your mind is doing when it’s giving you all of this negative nagging.
It’s protecting you from perceived danger.
PROTECTING ME? BUT IT’S HOLDING ME BACK!
Your mind is protecting you, you get that, now right? So first of all, let’s give it some love and understanding. Instead of getting frustrated with yourself and believing the negative nagging voice, take a moment to acknowledge that this is a natural survival mechanism.
Have you noticed how the more frustrated you get, the stronger that nagging voice gets?
WHAT CAN I DO?
Come up with a phrase to use when you notice this negative voice.
I like to be a bit sarcastic with mine.
“Thank you for your observation but I require a second opinion.”
Then I check in with my heart because it holds the whisper that says “you can do it and you will”.
